A Case of ‘’Chronic Vasomotor Allergic Rhinitis” Treated with Homeopathy

A 51-year-old female patient with a diagnosis of ‘Vasomotor Allergic Rhinitis’ dating back about 20 years. She has undergone various antiallergic treatments without any success. There was also an attempt at homeopathic treatment with a rotation scheme of homeopathic remedies about a year ago, which yielded no results. Allergy tests have been negative. Clinical and laboratory investigations show no deviations from the normal reference values.

The symptoms change annually according to her, with no improvement. She occasionally experiences difficulty breathing, describing it as feeling like she’s not getting enough oxygen and ‘my brain blocks.’ Relief comes from stretching the skin on her face around the nose. She feels like a clamp is on her nose near its base, often followed by headaches that cover the forehead and the top of the head. Fresh air improves her condition, while warm, humid, or very cold winter weather worsens it. Mornings around 10 am are the worst, during which her vision is blurry ‘as if through cellophane.’ This clears up on its own. She has a watery, scant nasal discharge. Rhinitis symptoms are worst in the morning. She feels that certain pollens worsen her condition despite negative allergy tests.

She experiences an unpleasant sensation in her left ear at night, extending towards the throat, described as ‘chopping.’ It eases with warmth and a short massage behind the ear. She recently fainted, feeling throat constriction and irritation shortly after the incident.

The lady describes herself as sensitive to cold, with purple spots and a nettle-sting sensation appearing in winter. Occasionally, she loses her voice, usually preceded by a cough.

She has joint pains, starting in the right leg, then moving to the lower back, left leg, and spine. She often takes pain relievers, sometimes up to twice a day. Currently, the pain is in her lower back and spine. She has visited mineral baths for this, but the joint pains worsened.

Occasionally suffers from flu and colds, sometimes with high fevers.

Family history: Father had a stroke and died of a heart attack. Mother, aged 72, has had a heart attack and four stents.

I chose Natrum Muriaticum (Nat.mur) because, on a mental level, the patient disliked company and preferred solitude. She was reserved and found it difficult to cry in the presence of others. She preferred to solve her problems independently.

Physically, her nasal symptoms and vision were worse in the morning. A lack of taste in food is a characteristic symptom associated with Nat.mur, as is aggravation from sun exposure and watery discharge.

Follow-up: 5.08.22

Two months later, the patient’s energy had improved. She reported feeling less worried and more calm. Symptoms of nasal catarrh and obstruction were greatly alleviated. The stitching pain at the root of the nose and the watery discharge disappeared, and the morning vision problems ceased. She could now taste her food. She considered leaving her job due to stress. Currently, she is disturbed by bone pain.

Prescription: wait

Second follow-up: 10/06/2023

The patient experienced wandering joint pains, which were most bothersome. The pain improved with rest and motion. Her food preferences changed – she now enjoys more bread with butter, eats more fruits, and is less thirsty. She still experiences aggravation from sun exposure, and warmth makes her condition worse. Her sleep position is on her back with a hand over her head. The patient worries about her children and tries to please others. She found a new job.

Prescription: Pulsatilla

After Pulsatilla joints pain significantly was less. So we can see the beautiful effect of homeopathy, how gentle and save is and of course takes time as a whole process.
